HUD - NEIGHBORHOOD NETWORKING FOR SENIORS IN MEMPHIS TENNESSEE |
The two CLCs in this plan will be part of an ongoing program through MECCA sponsored by the National Science Foundation. These resources will be networked via MECCA to two other HUD assisted Neighborhood Network programs being planned for Robinhood and Walnut Park. An alliance of these OLSC will be formed in conjunction with the MECCA consortium which includes most of the institutions of higher education in Memphis as well as the Memphis City and Shelby County schools, to coordinate network resources, support, and educational programming.
MECCA (The Memphis Educational Computer Connectivity Alliance) will provide two years of ISDN or other appropriate connectivity to their Internet server located at the University of Tennessee, Memphis (contingent upon NSF cooperative agreement funding). The Co-Director of the MECCA program will volunteer to train and supervise the OLSC activities at both Plough Towers and St. Peter Manor. The Plough Foundation: A proposal was submitted to this foundation which outlined the Neighborhood Network proposal providing the specific aims, timeline, and program for continued support. On the basis of this request we have received $37,182.00 from this group to proceed with the construction and staffing of our Community Learning Centers (CLCs).
The Assisi Foundation: The same proposal submitted to the Plough Foundation was also submitted to this foundation along with a strong letter of support from the Bishop. We have since received confirmation of funding for $37,182.00 to complete and staff our CLCs.
The Durham Foundation: The proposal submitted to both the Plough Foundation and the Assisi Foundation was also submitted to this foundation. $15,000.00 was requested from this group and they responded with provisional funding. If both Plough and Assisi Foundations provided funding then the Durham Foundation would provide the requested support. Since both Plough and Assisi Foundations have provided support, all three foundations will be providing the support requested. The total of foundation support is currently $89,364.00. This completes the need funding for CLCs at both Plough Towers and St. Peter Manor.
