Welcome to the UTHSC Faculty Senate Webpage
In 1971, the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees established the Faculty Senate of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, as well as the Faculty Senates of the other UT campuses in Knoxville, Chattanooga and Martin. According to its bylaws (see Appendix C of the Faculty Handbook), the Faculty Senate exists to represent the faculty as its sole elected body and to provide a systematic means for faculty participation in the affairs of The University of Tennessee. Faculty members in each department elect senators for 3-year terms, with one senator representing each 15 faculty members in the department and with each College having a minimum of 8 senators (some senators are elected at-large). Each year, the senators in each College elect their representative on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee.
The Executive Committee represents the Faculty Senate in meetings with the administration and other campus and off-campus groups and handles emergency and interim business between Faculty Senate meetings. The Executive Committee also serves as the liaison to the administration, interacts with the state legislature and lobbyists, revises the Faculty Handbook, and counsels, arbitrates or intercedes on behalf of faculty in handling faculty grievances. In the past two years, the officers of the Faculty Senate have worked diligently to be certain that all senators and executive committee members are duly elected and represent the faculty as intended by the UT Board of Trustees.
This website contains information on the Faculty Senate that includes its bylaws and procedures manual, the roster of senators, committee descriptions and membership, meeting schedules, and recently approved agendas and minutes of Senate meetings. The Chancellor’s Advisory Cabinet has also approved the posting of their minutes on this website.
